Adiponectin is a cytokine secreted by adipose tissue that regulates glycolipid metabolism and energy balance and regulates insulin sensitivity. Free fatty acids are not only involved in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and insulin resistance but also impair the function of beta cells.
