水墨的背景宛如一个大舞台,古典、近代、当代三道幕景。从时间上推移,古典水墨厚厚的积淀,似一本字典,分类瓦解实用。近代水墨背景是在初开国门,受到西方文化投影下的一次尝试,而透明度极高的当代水墨,是世界性文化敞开空间下,自然产生的新背景,故发展的余地相对大些。涉及三道背景,带来的可能是一种历史的认可性,静静的观察和全然不置可否。古典水墨背景作为一本字典意义上的范本,理论上的成熟,后补拾遗充实,作品在视觉时间上的重复观注,影响了一代又一代人,也使得作品受古典精神下的约束与反约束,变得可循环,可寻找和可读解。
