Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston discovered genetic defects in two premature cases of atherosclerosis. The problematic gene refers to a gene that produces apoA-1. Apo A-1 is the major protein component of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), a compound that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream. HDL is a “beneficial” lipoprotein. It has been found to be related to prolonged life and reduced incidence of heart disease. Sotirios K. Karathanasis and colleagues found additional fragments of DNA in the apo A-1 gene of two sisters (a 29-year-old and 31-year-old) who developed premature atherosclerosis. They have two defective genes each and they don’t suffer from this family
