BACKGROUND: Relationship between adult asthma symptoms and the indoor environment. Objective: To study the current asthma symptoms (wheezing or dyspnea episodes) and the hospital indoor environment and humidity. Design: All winter workers in four geriatric hospitals (n = 87) were studied. Determination of indoor air pollutants, concrete ground humidity, dust allergens. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed on the basis of age, gender, attributive quality and humidity of participants’ own residence. Results: Currently, 17% of asthmatics are reported and 8% are diagnosed with asthma by their doctors. Asthma symptoms were more common in two buildings (adjusted OR = 8.6; 95% CI 1.3-56.7). Moisture-related degradation products of bis (ethylene-hexyl) -phthalate (DEHP) in building material polyvinyl chloride (PVc) were detected in the indoor air of the two buildings: 2-ethyl- 1-hexane (2-32 μg / m 3) (CAS nr 104-76-7). Asthma symptoms are related to the relative humidity on the concrete floor and ground floor ammonia. In a state-of-the-art hospital built by the Society for Human Intelligence, the humidity level is low and asthma symptoms are few (4%). Cats (Fel d1) and dog allergens (can f1) were found in the dust of all 4 buildings (geometric mean 340 ng / g and 2490 ng / g, respectively). House dust mites (Der p 1, Der f 1, or Der m 1) were found in 75% of all samples (geometric mean 130 ng / g). There was no correlation between the amount of allergens and asthma symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: Asthma symptoms may be related to increased humidity on the concrete floor of buildings and to 2-ethyl-1-hexane, an indicator of moisture-related alkalinization and degradation of plasticizers DEHP in building materials. And elderly hospitals can be cats, dogs and dust mite allergens increased significantly contaminated?
