In the traditional EFL classroom, teachers focus exclusively on the knowledge of language itself. As a result, despite that the students are linguistically competent, they have a major problem with pragmatic competence. The chief concern of this paper is to explore the relation between the Cooperative Principle (CP) and the Speech Act (SA) theories and suggest how to actually enhance EFL students’ pragmatic competence through the explicit instruction of the CP and the SA theories,as well as various socio-pragmatic input and practice.
