Foreign investors’ views on the Korean economy are clearly turning optimistic as a result of external reform and opening-up of South Korea and its positive assessment of its future prospects. Some internationally renowned investment banks and securities firms (such as Merrill Lynch) recently considered South Korea a promising market and are investing more in South Korea. Merrill Lynch experts say short-term interest rates, which had soared to 25%, have now dropped to around 7% as a result of the successful agreement between the labor, regulatory and government authorities on economic reforms. The Wall Street Journal also reported that pensioners and money managers in Europe even started to withdraw their funds from other countries to increase their investment in Asia.
