胡乔木晚年对“什么是社会主义,如何建设社会主义”这一历史性的课题倾注全力,认真研究探讨,提出了许多有价值的新观点和新见解。他主张对于社会主义的认识,要随着历史的前进不断探索,不断更新;要正确处理现实的社会主义与马列经典著作中有关社会主义的论述的关系;要建设好社会主义,必须使全党把工作中心彻底转移到经济建设上来,必须按客观经济规律办事,必须坚持一切从我国社会主义初级阶段出发,必须善于向资本主义国家学习等。这些思想大大丰富了中国特色社会主义理论。
