民营剧团出现于20世纪80年代前后。这些土生土长的民营剧团主要活跃于农村地区。它们的演出丰富了当地农民的文化生活。那时候的民营剧团往往处在一种自生自灭的状态。到90年代,国家陆续出台了一些扶持民营文化的措施,民营剧团发生了很大的变化。目前仅在山西省,在册的民营剧团就有111个。山西晋阳艺术团就是他们其中最大的一个。 Private theater companies appeared around the 1980s.
