甘薯营养丰富、适应性广、增产潜力大,是我国主要的粮饲兼用作物,又是一种急待开发的经济和能源作物.常年种植面积9000万亩左右,总产约1亿t,在粮食生产和农村经济中占有重要地位.随着生物技术的应用,国内外对甘薯病毒病的研究有了较大进展,证实病毒病是造成甘薯种性退化、产量下降、品质变劣的主要原因.自1988年以来,我国对甘薯脱毒技术的应用研究取得了突破性进展,成功地将脱毒试管苗应用于生产,并在甘薯大面积生产中取得巨大的经济和社会效益.
