与以往单(双)卫星探测不同,利用ClusterⅡ四颗卫星的磁场数据,可以直接计算连续变化的场向电流(FAC)密度,这为研究场向电流与地磁活动之间的关系提供了一个很好的条件.对2001年8月和10月2次磁暴期间Cluster卫星穿越磁尾等离子体片边界层时的探测数据进行了分析,研究了这2个磁暴期间场向电流变化及其与极光电集流指数AE之间的关系.主要结果如下:(1)在这两次磁暴期间,场向电流有明显的增强;(2)从磁暴的急始到主相初期,场向电流密度的大小与AE指数近似负相关;(3)在主相后期和恢复相初期,场向电流密度大小与AE指数近似正相关;(4)在磁暴恢复相后期,场向电流与AE指数无明显变化关系.
