日本航空界目前最大的项目是下一代运输机C-X和反潜巡逻机P-X。它们将成为C-1运输机和P-3反潜机的后继机型。为此日本投入了3400亿日元的巨款,要打造世界上最先进的运输机和反潜巡逻机。虽然投资很高,但精明的日本军方还是要求尽量降低成本。所以两种飞机同时设计,机身部件要能部分通用,电子设备尽量采用较便宜的民用品。 2004年12月,两种机型的等大实体模型已经完成,即将开始风洞实验,预计2007年首飞,2011年前后完成服役。
