This article describes a new method for calculating and comparing the ignition overvoltage decay when the overvoltage extends upward from the overvoltage source. Prior to the Hercules III each flight and model ignition curve determined by the attenuation of the curve. The new method of testing overpressure data is based on three points. First, for similar carriers on the same launch frame, the size of the overpressure data generated by each experiment may be different due to engine or obstacle differences, but the attenuation coefficient should be the same. Second, obstacles to launch vehicles, exhaust plumes and launchers must be considered. Third, overvoltages extend from an overvoltage source around obstacles (especially launchers) to a free field and require a transitional distance to overvoltage into a free-expanding wave. The introduction of Hercules III flight data and 7.5% of the model data confirm the new attenuation model.
