乔治·爱略特是十九世纪众多小说家中的思想家,其道德观与绝大多数思想家是不同的。她认为道德行为的本质是感情的而非理智的。其代表作《米德尔马契》中的人物都是按其道德观塑造的。
George Eliot, a thinker in many novelists of the nineteenth century, is different in morality from most thinkers. She believes that the essence of moral behavior is emotional rather than rational. The characters in his masterpiece “Middlemarch” are shaped according to their moral values.
