From the perspective of all countries in the world, the level of government control in a country always shows a positive correlation with the level of its mistrust. This phenomenon is explained by a theoretical model. It is found that low trust not only corresponds to the more stringent regulation in reality, but also corresponds to the high demand for regulation. Because in a low-trust society, the right thing to do in the game is to trust the merchant, and to control the merchants, people support government control, although it is fully realized that such control will lead to corruption. The model predicts that even if regulation is corrupt and inefficient, people living in low trust levels still want more regulation. Using empirical data from World Wide Survey, the empirical analysis supports the main conclusions of the model. Finally, the author points out the inadequacy of research and the direction of further research.
