It has been reported that formalin has a mutagenic effect on insects, bacteria, and yeasts. In vitro tests on mammals also show an increase in the rate of chromosome aberrations, but no increase has been shown in mammalian in vivo experiments. Swenbery et al. Reported an increased incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer in mammals exposed to formalin gas and therefore argue that humans are responsible for the consequences of human exposure to formalin. To evaluate the effect of formalin preservatives on the frequency of SCE, the authors performed an analysis of SCE in dissecting room workers before and after exposure to formalin preservatives.
