Eugene O’Neill is known as the father of American drama. His works vividly show us the pictures of modern American society, reflecting the living conditions and inner world of the American people in the 20th century, marking the maturity stage of the American drama. Beyond the Skies is the first multi-screen play in O’Neill’s work. Its appearance caused a sensation in the boring American theater industry and laid the foundation for O’Neal’s position in the United States. This article will use Jung’s prototype theory of personality masks and shadow personality prototype to analyze the protagonist Robert’s life history: how he from the first one idealism transformed into a realist, and finally to death in order to expose Robert’s tragedy roots.
