As an important writer in the history of American literature, the individualistic thinking expressed by Emerson’s works has had an important influence on American culture. The independent “sovereign” individuals he advocates isolated from others inevitably give priority to and independent of any public purpose and standard of good and evil external to the individual. However, his Atomic Individualism must answer the question of how individuals can establish themselves prior to the social relations and public values in which they exist. How is it possible for Emerson’s personal ethical practice and how to establish an association with the goodness of the public? From his related arguments, one can find his unique answer to these questions.
