Albert Einstein’s Overcoat
One day the famous American scientist Albert Einstein came across an old friend of his in a street in NewYork.
“Mr Einstein,”said the friend,“It seems that you need to have a new overcoat. Look, how wornout(穿得破旧的) it is.”
“It doesn’t matter,”answered Albert Einstein.“No one knows me here in New York.”
Several years later, they met in New York again. Einstein had become a world-famous physicist by then, but he still wore the same old overcoat. Once more his friend tried to persuade(劝说) him to buy a new one.
“There’s no need now.” said Einstein, “Everybody here has known me.”
Military Tactics(军事策略)
During the Black Hawk War(黑鹰战争) of 1832, Lincoln(林肯) was captain of a militia company( 民兵连的上尉), but completely unfamiliar with military procedures, he made many blunders(大错). One day, marching with a front of over twenty men across a field, he wanted to pass through a gate into the next field.“I could not for the life of me remember the proper word of command for getting my company endwise(末端),”Lincoln recalled years later.“Finally, as we came near I shouted:‘This company is dismissed(解放) for two minutes, when it will fall in again on the other side of the gate.’”
When Did People First Realize
That the Earth is Not Flat
Greek scholars(希腊学者) had decided by 350 B.C. that the earth must be round. But the earlier belief that it was flat(平的) persisted(坚持) in other countries for many centuries afterwards. Even as late as the time of Christopher Columbus(哥伦布), at the end of the 15th century, a fear of falling off the edge of the earth existed among seamen.
One theory held by early man was that the sky was a kind of shield which came down to meet the earth on all sides, forming a boxed-in universe. It was the Greeks who hit on the idea that it was a circular slab(圆板).
The Greek philosopher(哲学家) Anaximander(611-546 B.C.) thought man might be living on the surface of a cylinder(圆柱体), which was curved(弯曲) from north to south. He was the first, as far as is known, to suggest any shape for the earth other than flat.
