The specific contaminating trace metals normally present in artificial seawater at toxic concentrations can be reduced to levels that allow the growth of sensitive marine phytoplankton and the development of certain invertebrates from egg to early larvae. The concentration of major trace metals is reduced below the safe concentration of specific marine phytoplankton species.
