In recent decades, due to the improvement of living environment, the incidence of chronic otitis media has decreased significantly. The authors reviewed 1123 patients with chronic otitis media who underwent surgical treatment within 20 years (1976-1995) of the otolaryngology department at Kuopio University Hospital in Finland. The patients were divided into two groups. The operative group consisted of patients from 1976 to 1985 and the operative group from 1986 to 1995 .
