In 1973, an article discusses the historical background and development of three-phase AC traction technology. The “further to be built” diesel locomotive referred to in this article has already been achieved in AC drive technology during this period. This shows one of the major trends in the power traction technology currently under development. The Am 6/6 locomotive, briefly described here, can be seen as a phase of a complete development plan. In 1963, the Swiss Federal Railways Administration put forward a plan to manufacture a mains-fed pilot-type variable-frequency locomotive equipped with an asynchronous traction motor.
