“桃花山释道”(8-11回)是《老残游记》研究中颇耐人寻味的一节,也是有效解读作品意蕴的关键。笔者认为对此一情节的解读不能太坐实于文本表面情节,或仅在传统文化语境内对其文化理想作考古式发掘,而只有结合文本语境与作者际遇,把这一文本放置于世纪初中西文化碰撞的语境中进行整体性考察,才能见出刘鹗在文化裂变时代所怀有的政治与文化憧憬。
