Objective To analyze the correlation between children ’s abdominal obesity related index and parents’ corresponding index, and compare the different indexes in reflecting the relationship between childhood obesity and parental obesity. Methods A stratified cluster sampling method was used to collect 94 families of over-weight / obese children with nuclear family from 6 to 13 years old in Chaoyang District, Beijing. The waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference , HC) were measured. The indexes of waist-height ratio (WHtR) and waist-hip ratio (WHR) were calculated to analyze the relationship between WC, HC, WHtR and WHR in children and corresponding indexes of their biological parents. Results The WC, HC, WHR and WHtR of children were positively correlated with the corresponding parents’ index (correlation coefficient was 0.201-0.397, P <0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that after adjusting for age and sex, (P <0.05). For every increase of 4.05cm for father’s WC value or 2.09cm for mother’s WC value, the WC value of their children would increase by 1cm. The mothers’ WHtR, WHR The correlation coefficient of WHtR and WHR in children was statistically significant (P <0.05). The regression coefficients of WHtR and WHR in father were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). Conclusion Children’s abdominal obesity index is closely related to the corresponding indicators of their parents. WC and HC are more likely to reflect the correlation between children’s body shape and their parents’ body size. WHR and WHtR tend to reflect the correlation between children’s body size and their mothers but not their father’s body size .
