苯并[a]芘一类稠环芳烃物质已发现有数十种,它们主要存在于煤烟、碳黑、煤焦油、沥青、石腊以及矿物油中。早在1775年,英国医生包特就已报告过伦敦打扫烟囱的工人患一种特殊的阴囊溃疡。1915年日本学者曾用煤焦油涂兔耳内侧,成功引致皮肤癌。1933年坎那崴等人终于从煤焦油中分离出一种致癌物质,经人工仿制合成成功,遂定为3,4-苯并芘,即苯并[a]芘。此后还陆续发现稠环芳烃中的一些其他致癌物质。而且逐渐积累越来越多的资料,说
