昆剧衰败的原因很复杂 ,其中经济方面的因素也不容忽视。昆剧的产生和发展与封建大地主大庄园经济以及贵族文人的消费享乐生活有着千丝万缕的联系。其过高的演出成本和贵族家庭堂会演出的方式拉大了与普通消费者的距离 ,失去了由普通市民构成的戏剧消费群体与广大的农村市场。昆班开拓市场的意识不强 ,缺少既精通表演又懂经营的专门人才。随着封建经济的衰退和演戏成本的不断上涨 ,共享式的戏楼剧院演出方式取代了家庭宴会的演出方式 ,曲高和寡的昆剧由于其上座率不高 ,票房收入低 ,因而更加受到冷落。总之 ,市场空间小 ,经营收入少 ,运作成本高是昆剧和其它许多高雅艺术面临的共同难题 ,值得深思
