National Semiconductor’s LM78 provides an internal temperature sensor and provides an input for the thermostat-type sensor output, so the microprocessor can be monitored in hardware. Thermostat-type sensor output is defined as the breakpoint output of a sensor equipped with an internal comparator and set-point. Examples of thermostat-type sensors include the O.S (over-temperature shutdown) output of the LM56 analog thermostat sensor and the LM75 digital sensor. While addressability and digital output allow multiple LM75s to be used in the system with the LM78, many designers are attracted to small form factor (SO7-23), low power, and inexpensive analog output sensors such as the LM45 or LM50 .
