Enthusiasm for success and longing for fame were originally the common pursuit of the majority of Chinese intellectuals in the old days. However, as obsessed with Li Hung-chang, they were infrequent and rare. Most people are “up to both the good and the poor, the poor are their own merits,” while Li Hongzhang is adversity, regardless of success or failure, always crossing the river pawn into no retreat. He regarded fame and fortune as a lifeblood, and he did not leave the government one day after his official career. He is an authentic “official fan.” Tseng Kuo-fan said: His two disciples, “Yu Yu desperately writing books, less Tsuen (Hung Zhang) desperately to be an official.” With a high degree of self-consciousness, fanatical momentum, strong desire chase famous officials into, this is Li’s typical character.
