Planning Researches Poor Architecture: Experiments in Rural Egypt Sometimes a book goes beyond the age, giving it a detailed description of a social wave that has not received the attention of people. “The building of the poor” is one such book. It was written in 1969 and was originally published by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture in Cairo. With the help of the Adela Stevenson Institute for International Affairs published by the University of Chicago Press in 1973 in the United States. Currently out of print. It was only considered a by-product of the solar-energy movement sweeping the globe at the time, a novelty of how to apply solar energy to different cultures and climates. Before his death in 1989, the author received some praise from his hometown of Egypt, but he did not take any action to support his idea of helping farmers create their own homes and communities and improve their quality of life. The Building of the Poor describes the new Gourna village planned and mentored by Hasan Fathy, near Luxor, Egypt. Instead of using more modern and expensive materials like steel and concrete, Fathy uses mud brick techniques he learned from Nubian, as well as traditional forms of Egyptian architecture such as enclosed courtyards and arched roofs. Fathy works with villagers to tailor their designs to their needs.
