I am happy to be invited to write this essay for readers of the first edition of Technology Herald. A magazine devoted to the exchange of science and technology between the United States and China is the most significant undertaking. I am convinced that it will receive the warm support of the U.S. science and engineering community and I hope it will be welcomed by the majority of Chinese readers. The exchange of scientific knowledge is the main tool for the progress of our country and our people. Scientific knowledge is not only the key to understanding nature, but also the key to promoting technological development so as to meet human needs and improve living standards. The People's Republic of China is now engaged in accelerating the modernization process. To promote science and technology exchanges with other countries is an important part of our modernization work. The United States is honored to play an important role in this exchange.
