辛克莱·路易斯笔下的《大街》所呈现的戈镇生活真实地反映了20世纪二三十年代美国社会风采,主人公卡萝尔是一位接受过大学教育且富于罗曼蒂克的城市姑娘,毕业后嫁给乡下医生肯尼斯特并来到了生活沉闷的戈镇,戈镇上几乎所有人都在暗中监视大街上的人然后乐此不彼地进行谈论。卡萝尔与众不同的行为举止使她陷入了整个大街监视式的权力运作机制中。本文主要以福柯在《规训与惩罚》中所述的全景敞视主义出发,分析《大街》里呈现的观看与被观看二元统一体的机制,以及卡萝尔在这样的规训机制下的反抗与妥协。
The town life presented by Sinclair Lewis’s “The Great Street” truly reflects the American social style of the 1920s and 1930s.
