通过1985—1988年在兰溪、慈溪等杨梅产区进行田间调查、土壤和植株理化分析、侵染性病害病理鉴定以及施硼矫治试验等研究,首次明确了杨梅小叶、枯梢、簇生等病症是由生理性缺硼引起的。经电镜观察,缺硼叶片发生生理结构异常,叶绿素浓缩变形,细胞液泡破碎等现象。同时,测得叶片硼含量与叶面积和春梢长度呈正相关.与春梢簇生数呈负相关。采用土施硼肥和叶面喷硼对缺杨梅有显著的矫治效果和增产效益。
