1939年10月,在日伪政权的血腥统治下,上海“孤岛”的政治形势日益险恶。此时,由许广平等爱国人士领导的上海妇女界难民救济会,为了避免敌人的暗算和破坏,就采取保留团体名称,暂停会务工作的方式,转入地下秘密活动。同年10月25日,当上海妇女界难民救济会的各项会务工作暂停结束时,许广平就以该团体的名义,给朱白石写了一封亲笔信,信的具体内容如下。白石先生:
In October 1939, under the bloody rule of the Japanese-Puppet regime, the political situation in Shanghai’s “isolated islands” was increasingly pernicious. At this moment, the Shanghai Women’s World Refugee Relief Society, led by Xu Guangping and other patriots, shifted to underground secret activities by keeping the names of the groups and suspending the conference work in order to avoid the enemy’s plotting and sabotage.
