美国诺顿(Norton)公司研制了一种陶瓷轴承。它的寿命是钢制轴承的3倍至8倍。这种轴承是由氮化硅经热成形而制成的。现在的轴承,因受润滑油耐热性的影响,使用的温度有限(若能使用耐高温的润滑油,那么就有可能进一步提高轴承的使用温度界限)。而这种轴承它具有良好的耐高温、耐腐蚀、耐摩擦性能,因而它能应用于一般轴承不能胜任的领域。由于这种轴承重量轻,用在高速旋转发动机上很合适。另外,这种轴承的制造比钢制轴承简便。
