The recently held African National Telecommunications Ministerial Meeting decided to expedite the implementation of “one of Africa’s telecommunications projects.” The “Africa One” telecommunications project was proposed by the International Telecommunication Union in 1993. The main body of the project is a submarine optical fiber cable ring 40,000 kilometers long linking the continent to 29 sites in the coastal countries of Africa, enabling the coastal countries to connect to submarine optical cables through land optical cables and satellites. The entire project is estimated to cost 1.6 billion U.S. dollars, co-invested by Africa and related companies.
