This article describes the current status of International Nickel Ltd. Ontario offices in the automation of mining information systems. The cable television cable network is combined with a broadband radio antenna system to provide voice, data and image services to underground mines. This system formed the basis for field testing of the North Copper Cliff in Ontario in 1990. This experimental information system was developed to provide voice, data and image services to mobile and fixed sites in underground mines. In order to test the communication system, wired and wireless together. Data was acquired using supervisory control and data acquisition systems to monitor and control mines with programmable logic controllers and personal workstations to plan and manage mines. A fixed television system was installed in the test to observe the crushing station, the conveyor drive station and the skip dump section. The data and image system were tested by remote control of the scraper. The full functionality of the scraper was monitored by a computer and the scraper was operated and controlled via a standard radio interface and live video images. This article analyzes the field trials of information systems and the results achieved to date. According to the analysis, it provides a variety of alternative information system solutions for the future automated mining.
