The National Institute of Forestry Genetics of Korea has developed a method for extracting plastic materials from eucalyptus. Its plastic properties are the same strength and elasticity as plastics produced from petroleum, and are as biodegradable as natural wood and can be biodegraded within 10 months. They also transferred the PHBC gene of one of the bacteria in the soil to the genetic structure of the European poplar tree and used it to extract plastics.
