２００１年７月１６日至２９日在日本福冈美林马瑟游说游泳馆上演的第九届世界游泳锦标赛给世界泳坛带来了巨大震撼。在这８天的比赛中，共有８项世界纪录、４８项世界锦标赛纪录和５４项亚洲纪录被打破；有来１３４个国家泳协的１４９８名运动员参加了本届锦标赛；有１５．５万观众现场观看了比赛……可以说，这次锦标赛是国际际泳联组织的规模最大的一次游泳锦标赛。 以一批女将为代表的中国游泳队，以年轻人为主角的中国跳水队，以澳大利亚名将索普为首的泳坛巨人，都当之无愧地成为本届赛事最闪耀的亮点。用“振奋人心”来形容本届赛事，是最恰当不过了。
