Thirteen kinds of yellow and three kinds of white monokaryons were isolated from mycelium of eight Flammulina velutipes strains using the monokaryon protoplast technique. Of these, five yellow and two white monokaryons produced monokaryotic fruit bodies. Clear differences were observed in the color of the different yellow monokaryotic fruit bodies, as well as between the pilei and stipes of individual yellow monokaryotic fruit bodies, suggesting that the yellow color is under the control of multiple alleles.
