Barrels of waste rock from a South African gold mine were milled in a mill using a 600 mm diameter mill. The factors influencing the rate of rock abrading and the particle size of the product were investigated, including the rock mass, the concentration of the slurry, the particle size distribution of the rock, the rotating speed of the mill and the structure of the lifting plate. Experimental studies show that with the increase of rock quality, the rate of abradability per unit mass increases obviously. A simple test of rock hardness shows that the rock hardness is related to the abradability rate. The speed at which the final product is produced from coarse rock is consistent with the conventional grinding conditions under certain conditions. The article discusses the corollary based on the problems found in loop design and control.
