Meteorologist Zeng Qingcun was awarded the International Meteorological Organization （IMO） Prize by the World Meteorological Organization on June 22， for his contributions to satellite meteorological remote-sensing theory， numerical weather prediction theory， meteorological disaster prevention and the earth system model.
Zeng， 81， received a PhD degree in physical-mathematical sciences from the Institute of Applied Geophysics at the Soviet Union’s Academy of Science in 1961. He has been a researcher with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） since 1966 and served as its director in 1984-93.
He was elected a CAS academician in 1980 and an honorary member of the American Meteorological Society in 2014.
The IMO Prize is the most important award in meteorology. It is given annually to scientists who have made outstanding contributions to meteorology， hydrology and the geophysical sciences. Zeng is the third Chinese to win the honor following Ye Duzheng in 2003 and Qin Dahe in 2008.

While demand for labor in traditional industries is shrinking amidst the growing downward economic pressure in China， such demand in emerging industries， by contrast， is increasing. In order to stabilize employment and guarantee people’s livelihoods， the government should improve the quality and efficiency of its services for job seekers， especially college graduates， migrant workers returning home to look for work， and people who find it difficult to get work.
Tianjin-based Nankai University has established an online platform that connects graduates with employers. Companies or individual colleges of the university can inform students about job openings and provide guid- ance according to their individual needs.
Some areas have offered incentive policies such as reduced taxes to encourage returning migrant workers to set up their own businesses. More support in funding and technology， however， should be offered by local governments. For those having difficulty finding employment， such as workers laid off from traditional industries undergoing upgrading and transformation， necessary technical training should be provided to help them secure new jobs.
Full employment is essential to the improvement of living standards. Therefore， multiple government departments， including those responsible for civil affairs， human resources and social security， should make concerted efforts to ensure ample employment opportunities. More Versatile Trade Unions

Shenzhen， the first of China’s special economic zones， in south China’s Guangdong Province， hosts over 10 million factory workers. A new generation of migrant workers has come to form a majority of the labor force. The new workers， who have received better education than their predecessors and have grown accustomed to urban life， have stronger awareness of their rights as well as more diversified aspirations.
In order to provide better services for these workers， Shenzhen’s municipal trade union has recruited college graduates， including some from prestigious universities such as Peking University， to become professional trade union representatives tasked with promoting trade union reforms and organizing workers to form closer bonds. In order to win workers’trust， the newly recruited trade union representatives have strived to attract workers to participate through a publicity campaign involving popular social networking platforms such as QQ and WeChat.
In addition， they have helped factory workers form hobby groups for activities including yoga， badminton， running， hiking and English practice. By the middle of 2016， the number of workers participating in such activities had increased to some 1，000 per week in a pilot community， accounting for 1 percent of the community’s total workforce.
Through the experiment， the municipal trade union expects to make breakthroughs in wage negotiations， labor dispute resolution and enriching employees’ spare time as well as to develop a set of guidelines that can be replicated elsewhere.

Online gambling is becoming increasingly rampant. An online gambling case recently uncovered in Fuzhou， southeast China’s Fujian Province， involved 25 suspects and over 840 million yuan （$127 million）.
The feature of sending and collecting socalled “red envelopes” through the leading instant messaging app， WeChat， has provided a new way for people to present each other with the traditional money-bearing gift during festivals. The function， however， has been exploited by some to facilitate gambling.
Compared with traditional casinos， online gambling is more covert. Some of it takes place on legal platforms and can hardly be identified as gambling without solid evidence. Young people are more likely to be lured into online gambling， as it has a comparatively low entry cost. Sometimes， people are even enticed into such gambling by being allowed to participate without money. To curb the problem， the permanent shutting down of online platforms involved in gambling is unrealistic. Such a solution is overly simplistic and may affect users’ lawful use of the platforms. Instead， the problem， which has arisen due to the advance of technology， should be solved using technical means. The monitoring of WeChat groups through which red envelopes are sent frequently， for instance， should be strengthened.
In addition， although online platforms are not to blame for illegal gambling， Internet companies have a responsibility to strengthen supervision and management of their platforms and to crack down on the issue in collaboration with government departments. Internet companies are best-placed to detect online gambling， as they possess the core technologies and evidential data.
TBASKETBALL CENTER DRAFTED BY NBA
Chinese big man Wang Zhelin was selected by the Memphis Grizzlies of the American National Basketball Association （NBA） on June 24.
Another Chinese player， Zhou Qi， was drafted by the Houston Rockets the same day.
Wang， 22， became a professional player in 2012 and joined the Chinese team in 2013. He is a key member of the Fujian Sturgeons， a team in China’s top league， the Chinese Basketball Association （CBA）.
The 2.14-meter （7-foot） center started to make headlines in April 2012 for his outstanding performance at the Nike Hoop Summit， an annual， all-star tournament featuring a team of international players （the World Select Team） playing against the USA Basketball Men’s Junior Select Team. Wang scored 19 points and 8 rebounds to help the World Select Team to an 84-75 victory over the USA Select Team. This was the best performance by any Chinese basketball player at the event.
Both Wang and Zhou will be playing for China at the upcoming Summer Olympic Games in Brazil.
