Nowadays, the incidence of tuberculosis is increasing all over the world, and the protection efficiency of BCG varies greatly among different populations. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a new and effective anti-tuberculosis vaccine. Recent studies have found that certain exocrine proteins of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are highly antigenic and play an important role in stimulating anti-infective immunity in the early stage. One of the low-molecular-weight (6 × 10-3) exocrine protein-early secretory antigen (ESAT-6) was isolated and purified by biochemical methods. The two proteins were identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and Western blot analysis.
