This conference is the first grand gathering of Chinese scientists and technicians in the new century. During the meeting, the old, middle and young scientists of science and technology in the country came together to fulfill their duties and responsibilities with all their enthusiasm and responsibility. They spoke freely about science and education and rejuvenated the country. The atmosphere of the conference was warm, democratic and truthful, and it was a complete success. At the opening ceremony of the General Assembly, General Secretary Jiang Zemin delivered an important speech on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council.
