马是劳伦斯作品中的一个主要意象。收于劳伦斯晚期诗集《三色紫罗兰续编》的短诗《白马》通篇只有三十个单词,只有年轻人和白马这两个主要意象,虽然简单明了,但是这两个意象却包含了非常深刻的内涵。白马既可以理解为基督教传说中载着圣乔治屠龙的圣马,又可以让读者联想到柏拉图的灵魂马车;而年轻人既可以理解为基督教圣乔治原型的置换变型,也可以理解为驾驭灵魂马车的理性的化身;并且青年和白马是劳伦斯作品中经常出现的两个意象,该诗的这两个意象所蕴含的意义使劳伦斯的思想体系在他创作晚期走向成熟。
Horse is a major image in Lawrence’s work. The short poem “White Horse”, a collection of late Collected Works of Lawrence’s “Pansies”, has only thirty words in total. Only the two major images, young and white, are simple and clear. However, these two images contain very unusual Profound meaning. The white horse can be understood as a holy horse carrying Christian swordsmanship in Christian legends and a reminder of Plato’s carriage of the soul; while young people can both be understood as a transformative variant of the Christian St. George’s Creed and can also be understood as controlling the soul The rational incarnation of carriage, and the youth and white horse are two images often appearing in the works of Lawrence. The implication of these two images of the poem makes Lawrence’s system of thought mature in his later works.
