汉语中,“批评”一词似乎应用甚晚,中国古代倒是习用“批判”这个概念。宋金之时,少林寺有一篇塔铭:“评论先代是非,批判未了公案”,可见后来的“批评”概念,是把“批判”和“评论”两个词合为一体了。《辞源》上对“批判”含义的解释是“评论是非”,所以批判之原义是褒贬共行,与“文革”的“大批判”概念 In Chinese, the term “criticism” seems to be applied very late.
