近代以来醴陵地区产生了众多人才,在湖南形成了县域人才群体出现的独特现象。在近代史上,醴陵先后出现过两大人才群体的现象,许多人都对湖南甚至全国产生了深刻的影响。近代醴陵之所以产生如此多的人才原因有四:一是醴陵人的个性是近代醴陵人才群体出现的性格因素,二是经世致用思想的熏陶是醴陵人才出现的精神土壤;三是浓厚的乡土情节是近代醴陵人才群体出现的重要桥梁,四是特定的时代需要是近代醴陵人才群体出现的契机。
