王阳明的“致良知”思想以往学界多从道德哲学的角度、很少从社会改良思想的角度加以研究。“致良知”思想其实也是一种社会改良思想,它是对儒家“有教无类”思想的继承和发扬。王阳明也可以被称为社会改良派:他对良知、致良知和知行合一的阐述奠定了他社会改良的哲学基础;他对“三代之治”的圣王社会和“满大街都是圣人”的圣人社会的描述,凸显了其社会改良的价值追求;其社会改良手段也多种多样,主要有发布告谕、讲学、办学校和推行乡约等;其社会改良思想于当今社会仍有现实意义,值得借鉴。
