野牡丹虽沾“牡丹”之名,却与牡丹非亲非故,两者之间没有任何血缘关系。它又称金石榴、活血丹,为野牡丹科野牡丹属常绿小灌木。通常株高30～120厘米,茎钝四棱形或近圆形,茎和叶柄密被鳞片状糙伏毛,叶对生,长椭圆形至圆卵形,正反面皆密被长柔毛。聚伞花序顶生,5片玫瑰红或粉红色花瓣,中心是金黄色雄蕊,甚为娇丽,蒴果长1～1.5厘米。花期5～7月,果期10～12月。可用于庭院点缀栽培,也很适合小型盆裁。基本习性野牡丹原产于热带低海拔以下的山坡松林下。我国广东、广西、云南及台湾等地均有分布。性喜温暖气候,生育适温约20～30℃,冬季要求不低于10℃,喜阳光,忌强光直射。耐旱,但土壤湿润则生育较旺盛。
