本质在哲学上有三个基本属性，一是事物本质的唯一性，二是本质的多层次性，三是本质表现的多方面性。“解放生产力，发展生产力，消灭剥削，消除两极分化，最终达到共同富裕”是邓小平对社会主义本质所做的概括，他在层次上展现为社会主义低级阶段（包括初级阶段）、高级阶段的阶段性本质，具有哲学上的唯一性和多层次性，同时在社会主义发展的不同阶段，它会在社会主义目的、职能上表现出来，从而贯穿整个社会主义社会。
