平型关隧道全长6190m,为直线隧道,坡度3~5‰,两洞口高差24.4m。在低洞口端设有帘幕与风道吹吸式50A_4-11 NO22轴流风机两台并联作业,叶片角25°,电机功率每台70kW,通风量160m~3/s。帘幕为双扇左右平移式钢结构,由0.6kW电机通过钢丝绳传动。帘幕信号为遮断式,与车站联锁。该隧道铺设整体道床,洞内排水不良,相对湿度为82~100%。通过隧道的列车由东风4型(4000hp)内燃机车单机牵引,上坡载重960吨,下坡为1600吨,车速约35km/h,行车密度13对/日。1982年4月,太原铁路局对平型关隧道采用帘幕吹入式机械通风(列车上坡车尾进洞0.5分钟关帘幕
