《红岩》一画,是我的大胆尝试。从构思到创作的整个过程中,我始终遵照革命的现实主义和革命的浪漫主义相结合、形式和内容相一致的原则来进行。当然,既是尝试便不够成熟,记下点滴经验,目的是求教。1960年9月,瞻仰革命纪念地红岩村,描得几张不同角度的素材稿,可惜时间太短促,生活体验很不够。到了长沙开始整理写生稿,初次产生一张“记录片”(曾在北京“山河新貌”展览会中展出),画中所吸取的素材是:坡脚的大黄桷树(这是有名的“阴
